  STANDARD WORK

STANDARD WORK
An essential building block of a Lean Factory

Introduction
Standard Work (also called Standardized Work) is the cornerstone in the Toyota Production System (TPS). It is an essential building block of a Lean Factory.  Standard Work is different from standardization or work standards and is not yet well understood by most organizations pursuing Lean.

When properly documented, Standard Work not only provides a tool for managing Productivity, Quality, Cost, Delivery and Safety (PQCDS) but also a baseline for future kaizen activity.  Standard Work is defined as the most effective combination of manpower, material, and machinery and it is built on the three elements of takt time, work sequence and standard WPI.

The Great Reasons to Attend
Do you struggle with...?

  • The time required training new workers?
  • Inconsistent results from training?
  • Variable cycle times between workers?
  • Inability to meet takt time?
  • Inability to sustain kaizen event results?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, Standard Work is the course for you

Training Agenda
This course will be the "practical way” format where you will learn in class how to create Standard Work through a combination of exercises, case studies and workshops with Standard Work documents.  The three elements of Standard Work (Takt Time, Work Sequence, and Standard Work in Process) will be taught.  The course will cover:

Day 1

  • Standard Work Overview
  • The difference between Standard Work, standardization and work standards
  • The link between TWI, Job Instruction and Standard Work
  • Takt time calculation (workshop)
  • How to perform direct process observation for measuring cycle times
  • Defining work sequence
  • Balancing to takt time

 Day 2

  • Determining where and how much Standard Work in Process (SWIP) is needed
  • Using the Table of Production Capacity by Process
  • Assessing quality, method and equipment to determine whether the line is capable of Standard Work
  • Creating Standard Work Combination Sheets (SWCS) (workshop)
  • Creating Standard Work Sheets (SWS) (workshop)
  • Visual Management and auditing and improving Standard Work (workshop)
  • Kaizen based on Standard Work
